The principal objective is to provide the basic knowledge concerning:
The mineralogical, petrographic, geochemical and petrophysical characteristics of natural and artificial lapideous materials used in industry and Cultural Heritage.
Overview of the environmental effects related to the use of stone materials
exercises with the guide of the teacher in the laboratories of the Department. Students will carry out brief reports on practical activities
frontal lessons
Exercises on the determination of the physical characteristics of stone materials: determination of the resistance to crystallization of salts; water absorption test by capillarity; water absorption test by total immersion; determination of open porosity, Determination of drying index, Determination of apparent and actual specific weight.
Exercise for reading and interpreting X-ray diffractometric analysis
Exercise for reading and interpreting X-ray fluorescence analysis
Microscope exercise on mortars and ceramics.
Course syllabus
Use of lapideous materials in the past and in modern industry
Stone materials in current and historical buildings: employment criteria; methods of extraction and / or cultivation of stone materials.
Alteration and degradation of stone materials; types of degradation (chemical, physical and biological degradation); description of degradation phenomena; variables that determine the phenomena of alteration and degradation; cause-effect mechanisms; Arnold model.
Artificial lapideous materials: archaeological pottery and industrial ceramics. Raw material; the production process; classification and functionality of ceramic products. Archaeometric problems in the study of pottery of archaeological interest. Mannoni classification and Whitbread classification. Case studies.
Artificial lapideous materials: Mortars, plasters and wall paints (binders, aggregates and pigments). Classification and petrographic characterization in thin section. Case studies.
