Learning Objectives

The course aims to provide the advanced knowledge of innovative analytical methodologies for the characterization of natural and artificial stone materials and the skills to develop research projects aimed at the study of problems of archaeological interest (archaeometry of materials), industrial (production processes) ) and environmental (solid, water and atmospheric pollution)

Lectures and laboratory exercises

Detailed Course Content

Innovative methodologies (destructive, non destructive, micro-destructive, non invasive), advanced application for the characterization of natural and artificial stone materials (rocks, pigments, glass, ancient and modern ceramics, organic-inorganic coatings) and problems about archaeometry, industrial production processes (especially about innovative coating and consolidant for the protection of building stone materials) and environmental (pollution).
In the detail, during the course the following methodologies are examined:
• Innovative analytical methods destructive, non-destructive, micro-destructive and non invasive: TOF - ND, FTIR and Micro-FTIR, micro Raman spectroscopy, pXRF, XAS, PIXE, SANS.
• Comparison between TOF-ND (Time Of Flight – Neutron Diffraction) and XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) for quantitative phase analysis
• Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and micro- Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (µFTIR)
• Raman Spectroscopy
• Portable X-Ray Fluorescence (portable XRF)
• X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS)
• Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) and comparison with Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry (MIP) for structural characterization of materials
• Image analysis techniques: X-Ray and neutron radiography
• Durability Test
• Interpretation of Chemical and Minero-Petrographic dataset
• Case study of archaeological (archaeometry materials), industrial (manufacturing processes) and environmental (pollution, solid, water and air pollution) interest.
• Elaboration of Research Project
• Electronic Data Processing
• Quality certification (provenance studies on materials)
