Learning Objectives

The Course aims to transfer to the students the most advanced Concepts of recent Literary Debate, and to verify the Critical Skills of the students. These goals will be verified through a written essay and a final oral exam.



Detailed Course Content

The First Part introduces to the Theory of Literature as a Form of Human and Cultural Communication. The Second Part focuses on the relationship between Modern Self, Power, and Freedom in Machiavelli and Shakespeare.

Modulo B – Subjectivity, Power, and Freedom: Machiavelli and Shakespeare

Texts: Machiavelli, Il Principe, Einaudi; Discorsi sopra la prima deca di Tito Livio, Rizzoli (una selezione di capitoli verrà indicata a lezione; lo stesso per alcune lettere di Machiavelli che verranno messe a disposizione dal docente); W. Shakespeare, Amleto, Feltrinelli; Troilo e Cressida, Garzanti; Come vi piace, in Commedie romantiche, Mondadori.
