Learning Objectives

The course aims at reaching the C1plus level of CEFRL. It will provide the students with the necessary theoretical and methodological tools to analyse texts and discourse for a thorough understanding and a confident translation activity. It will also focus on the sociolinguistics of contemporary English.


Course Structure

The course consists of two modules with optional final test and it is entirely in English.

Lectures are based on the reference books, which are combined with additional resources provided on Studium (http://studium.unict.it/dokeos/2019/index.php). Lectures includes debates and discussion on selected topics and readings stduenst will be asked to make weekly. the reading list will be provided t the beginning of the course.

A questionnaire is also structured for the stduents to answer during the first week of lessons.



Detailed Course Content

The course consists of two modules + 1: English Sociolinguistics and Translation. Language classes will also be part of the course.

MODULE 1 – English Sociolinguistics

The module will focus of the English language spread. Starting from some basic concepts in sociolinguistics, students will trace back the various steps which have led the English language to its current status. Diatopic varieties will be analysed together with the linguistic, cultural and political implications they bring about.

MODULE 2 - TRANSLATION

The module has a twofold aim: on the one hand strengthening the translation strategies students acquired during their BA course through practice, on the other widening the students’ knowledge with reference to Translation Studies. Students will work on direct translation: English to Italian.
