This course aims at giving the theoretical knowledge and the practical capability for the structural design of buildings in seismic zone.
Single degree of freedom systems (SDOF)
The simple pendulum model. The equations of equilibrium in the dynamic field. The viscous dumping model and the hysteretic dissipation. Forced and Free pendulum motion: harmonic forces with and without dumping. Dynamic amplification factor and resonance. Response to impulsive loads and Duhamel's integral. Techniques of dynamic identification. Response to a seismic ground motions. Response spectra and design spectra. Elastic spectra and non-linear spectra. Examples of structures which can be modelled as a SDOF model. Passive and active vibration isolation.
Multi degree of freedom systems (MDOF)
Stiffness matrix. Mass matrix. Dumping matrix. Determination of modes of vibration and natural frequency of vibration. Modal analysis. Spectral analysis. Numerical methods for the integration of the equations of the motion. Non-linear dynamic analysis. Dynamic response of structures protected by a seismic isolation system or energy dissipation systems. Applications on modal analysis in order to evaluate the seismic demand in terms of stress and displacements.
Design of r.c. framed buildings in seismic zone
Organization of the structure. Estimate of seismic action and internal actions on structure. Sizing of structural elements. Model of structure. Basic and combined load conditions. Critical discussion of results of numerical analysis. Design of reinforcement, according to capacity design criterion.
Particular aspects, as the influence of non-structural elements on the global behaviour of the structure.
Design of r.c. buildings with shear walls in seismic zone
R.c. walls located only in the lower storey of the building and their influence on the seismic behaviour of the upper part of the building.
R.c. buildings in which the resistance to seismic action is provided by shear walls.
