HISTORY OF MEDIEVAL ART

The course aims to provide a basic knowledge of the history of Medieval and Early Renaissance Art in Italy, with an overview of the European context. Lessons and seminars will also be given on specific topics.

A) Architecture, painting, sculpture, book illumination and applied arts from the Early Christian to the end of the fifteenth century in Italy and in Europe, in relation with patronage, society, and the liturgical needs.

B) The city of Catania in the Middle Ages: art, architecture, urban history. Part of the lectures will be held by visiting the city and its monuments: the educational excursions are therefore a very important part of the course.
