knowledge and understandig:

The third year student, who has already mastered the categories of general linguistics and literary interpretation, will acquire, in the linguistic field, a good level of knowledge of the historical formation of the Romance languages,

their geographical distribution, the major differences and similarities between them, the linguistic structures that develop in diachrony in the transition from Latin to derived varieties; in the literary field, will acquire knowledge related to the formation of literary genres in the Middle Ages, according to a comparative perspective, expertise in the comparative analysis of medieval texts and ability to interpret the otherness of medieval literature. Finally, the student will acquire the basic knowledge and skills related to the edition of medieval texts.

applying knowledge and understanding:

Thanks to the acquired knowledge, the student will be able, from a linguistic point of view, to place diachronically and synchronically the peculiar linguistic phenomena of the various Romance languages and to grasp similarities and differences between languages. So students will be able to apply the knowledge gained in the direction of intercomprehension between Romance languages. From a literary point of view, students will be able to integrate knowledge about the literary genres, and in particular to the genre of the novel, in a diachronic perspective, to interpret the medieval texts in comparative perspective, to apply the categories of textual analysis. From a philological point of view, students will be able to apply the knowledge of textual criticism to the identification of the kind of tradition that conveys materially the texts. Place in front of the medieval work - this year it was decided to read Le Chevalier au Lion of the great novelist Chrétien de Troyes – students will be able therefore to analyze it in its various components, philological, linguistic, literary.

making judgement:

The differentiated nature, stratified, systematic and comparative, of the knowledge acquired will allow the student to formulate critical and original judgments, with repercussions on personal, relational and social life.

communication skills:

During the hours of exercise, debates and oral exams, students will be encouraged to improve their communication skills thanks to the knowledge and methods acquired.

learning skills:

The complexity of the proposed learning path and the continued focus on its implementation and actualization during lessons, exercises and verification, contribute to developing the students' learning skills, self-organization of the study, interdisciplinary connection.

Study of the origins and characters of the Romance languages.

History and forms of medieval romance literature with particular attention to the genre of "novel".
