The course aims at developing students’ medical vocabulary and useful functions of English for scientific and medical purposes; it also intends to provide students with a pragmatic tool for linguistic investigation and analysis of specific texts. Topics treated include diseases and symptoms, investigations, treatment, examining and prevention. General medical vocabulary related to parts and functions of the body, medical and para-medical personnel, education and training, research, and presentations are also introduced. At the end of the course, students will be able to: 1) interact with a degree of fluency that makes regular interaction with native speakers quiet possible; 2) understand extended speech and lectures on scientific topics; 3) explain a viewpoint on medical and scientific issues, giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
