Learning Objectives

1.Knowledge and understanding: This course aims at providing the students of Economics with the strategies for developing the four language-related skills at an intermediate level. Students will be encouraged to learn the meaning of new words and grammar rules in context. Language, vocabulary and structures related to the subject area will be introduced via authentic texts, articles and multimedia tools.

2. Applying knowledge and understanding: Students will be required to apply their linguistic competences when dealing with topics and issues related to the subject area of Economics and Business.

3. Making judgments: Linguistic competence is fundamental for a practical application of ESP to national and international work contexts.

4. Communication skills: Communication skills, which will be assessed through oral and written tests, are designed to provide the students with the adeguate tools for accessing to international work experience.

5. Learning skills: The course aims at developing the students' autonomous learning skills.



Detailed Course Content

Some definitions of the discipline and its main notions will be followed by a brief history of the economic thought and its most famous contributors. These topics will be discussed during the oral exam.

-Economics topics: What is Economics? Some definitions; Macroeconomics and Microeconomics; A brief history of Economics (from Plato to Mercantilism); Adam Smith; Karl Marx; John Maynard Keynes; Vandana Shiva.

-Business English topics: Corporate culture; Customer support; Products and packaging; Careers; Making deals; Company and community; Mergers and acquisitions; International trade.

 

Language classes. Students will be divided into the language classes according to their linguistic competence. A placement test will be organised in the first semester. Language classes are a fundamental part of the course.
