This module is designed for beginning students with no background in German language learning. No previous German language skill is required.

LANGUAGE MATERIAL

Phonetics and orthography: the alphabet.

Lexis: basic vocabulary and most common models of word-building.

Grammar items:

• Sentence: statement, question, command.
• Verbs: infinitive, indicative, imperative.
• Placing of the verb in the sentence: first and second place.
• Word order in a main clause.
• Auxiliary and modal verbs.
• Verbs with prefixes – separable and inseparable.

• Numerals: cardinal and ordinal numbers.

• Articles: definite and indefinite.

• Nouns: gender, plural, nominative, accusative, dative.
• Pronouns: personal, interrogative, possessive; the impersonal pronouns man, es, etwas, nichts. Prepositions: with accusative; with dative.

• Conjunctions: und, aber, oder, sondern, denn, dann.
• Negation: nicht, kein. 


Topics: family, friends, free time; work and social life; politics (political parties and systems of the German-speaking countries;
 important political events - e.g. Nazis, the economic miracle, the fall of the Berlin Wall, EU).
