Learning Objectives

The general course wants students to acquire the basic knowledge of the organisation and of the spread of culture in late medieval Europe (XIII ‒ XVI centuries). A special stress will be laid on the formation and diffusion of universities from the first half of the 13th century to the second half of the 15th century. The aim of the monographic course will be the organisation and the diffusion of knowledge thanks to Tommaso d’Aquino (1221-1274). His intellectual biography will show how the knowledge was organized and conveyed in late medieval Europe.


Course Structure

The course will take place through lectures, in which the teacher will develop the program.



Detailed Course Content

Description of historic events that have characterized the development of culture in late medieval Europe (centuries XIII-XVI). The course pays particular attention to the role of Holy Thomas of Aquin (1221-1274).
