Course Structure

The course is organized mainly through lectures and includes active participation of students and continuous interaction between the students and the teacher in the discussion of the topics covered. Among the planed activities there is the analysis and discussion, in the classroom, of case studies related to the issues addressed during the lessons, as well as the carrying out of individual and / or group thematic insights and/or projects.

Students are advised to read in advance the contents provided for each lesson in order to facilitate the understanding of the issues addressed and their discussion in the classroom.

If the teaching is given in mixed mode or at distance, the necessary changes may be introduced with respect to what was previously stated, in order to comply with the program provided and reported in the Syllabus.

Although not mandatory, the attendance of lessons is strongly recommended.

Learning assessment may also be carried out on line, should the conditions require it.

 

 

 

 

 

 




Detailed Course Content

The course of Economics and Business Management offers students a basic reference framework on business management processes.

It provides conceptual and operational tools to support managerial processes aimed both at defining and implementing strategies to obtain a defensible competitive advantage in the business in which the firm operates, and at defining firm growth paths, for example through entry into new sectors or new international markets.

In particular, the course deals with the following basic issues: the concept of firm and its governance; strategy and the process of analysis and elaboration of strategic choices; sector analysis and definition of sector, market and business; analysis of the external environment and the opportunities and threats arising from it; the 5 competitive strenghts model; analysis of the internal environment of the firm and its strengths and weaknesses; resources, competences and competitive advantage; competitive advantage based on cost leadership, differentiation and focus; competitive strategies and their implementation; corporate strategies: diversification, vertical integration, international strategies, strategic alliances; innovation-based strategies.
