Learning Objectives

Acquisition of intermediate knowledge of English (CEFR levels B1 / B2).

The Course aim to promote the acquisition of a professional competence in language both in professional and social field by stimulating and developing the use of the four abilities of language learning (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing)


Course Structure

The course is divided into 35 hours of lectures, including practical exercises and interaction.The course aims to achieve the linguistic and communicative skills corresponding to the B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, with reference to intermediate listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Students are expected to acquire linguistic knowledge aiming at improving their use of grammatical and syntactic-textual content in different contexts. The synthetic objectives of the course are: 1. Acquisition of knowledge and understanding; 2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding; 3. Autonomy of judgment; 4. Communication skills. Individual and group exercises will stimulate students to develop communication skills in English.

The final exam aims at verifying the knowledge acquired by the students in terms of linguistic competence (equal to a B1 + level) and contents related to the ESP field. A written exam is used to determine the final evaluation, to check the skills of Reading Comprehension and Writing and an oral interview (Speaking) on topics covered during lessons, hometown features, future plans, personal opinions, ESP.



Detailed Course Content

1 GRAMMAR /FUNCTION: Possessive nouns: possessive 's + of - Be, have, have got - Idiomatic uses of to have. Question forms. Use of linking words. Past Simple Listening/ Reading Activity: Listening comprehension on an article about strange offers of marriage Speaking: ask and answer questions about holidays and weekends. Writing: write about your best friends. TESTO 1
2 Possessive adjectives and pronouns - Adjectives with nouns and verbs: -ed and -ing forms - Comparative and superlative adjectives. Expressing likes/dislikes. Uses of ing-forms Listening/ Reading Activity: Listening comprehension on a newspaper article about dangerous jobs TESTO 1
3 Present simple and Present continuous – Adverbs of frequency Listening/Reading/Speaking Activity: Listen to interviews about different kinds of jobs. Talk about your perfect job. TESTO 1
4 Present Continuous/ “be going to” for future. Questions without auxiliaries. Use of “can” and “would”. Making a phone call Listening/Reading/Speaking Activity: listen to a radio program about going out for job. Make and receive a phone call TESTO 1
5 Future Forms: (present continuous, will, going to, present simple). Writing an e-mail. Listening/Reading Activity: Talk about your future plans related to your private life and your future job. TESTO 1
6 Present Perfect + ever/never. Can, have to, must. Giving advice. Replying to a website message. Listening/Reading/Speaking Activity: Listen to someone describing how he used his hidden talent. Talk about hidden talents. TESTO 1
7 Past Simple – Past Continuous - verb patterns - asking for/giving directions. Listening/Reading/Speaking Activity: Telling an anecdote or an accident occurred in the past. Writing an email describing a trip away. TESTO 1
8 Present Perfect + for/since. Uses of may, might, will. Seeing the doctor: illness. Listening/Reading/Speaking Activity: talk about your lifestyle/discuss food preference. Write about food/wellness TESTO 1
