Learning Objectives

The course aims to illustrate the genesis and development of the sacred image from the Early Christian period to the Middle Age. The relationship between each iconographic theme and the textual sources will be analyzed giving examples in different artistic media (monumental painting, mosaics, sculptures book illumination, luxury arts) and taking into account social and historical background.

Detailed Course Content

Lectures will analyze the power and significance of the holy images in the Middle Ages and the specific iconological value of the iconographic themes expressed in the examined works of art. Particular attention will be paid to the question of the legitimacy of the worship of image and how it influenced the codification of figurative themes and decorative programs after the iconoclastic age. Some insights will concern Sicilian examples of specific iconographic themes and subjects.
