Learning Objectives

- To identify the essential characteristics and pathogenicity of microrganisms and virus known to infect humans.

-To give general principles of microbial genetics.

- To give the fundamentals of immunology and to define the immunization practise relating it to the prevention or to treatment of infectious diseases (vaccine prophylaxis and serum prophylaxis/therapy)

- To describe the epidemiology of infectious diseases

- To describe and classify the mechanisms of action and resistance of antibiotics and antiviral,antifungal and antiprotozoal drugs.

- To give the principles regarding the control of microrganisms by physical and chemical agents.

- To describe the microbial methods of the Pharmacopeia

Structure, function, metabolism, nutrition, growth and control of the microorganisms. Characteristics of viruses.

Mechanisms of pathogenicity.

The fundamentals of immunology.

The main groups of bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses responsible of human diseases.

The epidemiology of infectious disease.

Sera and vaccines.

Antimicrobial drugs: mechanisms of action and resistance.

Genetics mechanisms in the microorganisms and applications of genetic engineering in pharmaceutical industry.

Control of microorganisms by disinfection and sterilization. Microbiological aspects of the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical production.

Microbiological Assays of the Pharmacopoeia.
