Learning Objectives

• Restoration
  

  The aim of the course is the illustration of the methodological steps which lead to the definition of the conservation criteria and the consequent technical solutions for the restoration of the historical buildings. Particular importance is attributed to the analysis and critical interpretation of the current state of the buildings, with special regard to the recognition of the phases of construction and to the state of deterioration.

   

  The course aims to enhance the students’ ability in integrating their historical, technological and structural competences and applying them in the preservation of the architectural heritage. Through some exercises, students are guided to develop their technical, interpretation and design skills in the field of historical buildings, while improving basic academic skills (comprehesion, communication, use of literature, problem solving).

• CONSOLIDAMENTO DEGLI EDIFICI
  

  The course aims at illustrating the methodological steps necessary to define the criteria for conservative intervention and the relative practical technical solutions to be designed for the restoration of the building, considering the structural improvement. Particular importance is attributed to the phase of basic knowledge and to the critical interpretation of the current state of the historical building, with special regard to the evaluation of the structural safety.

Course Structure

  The class includes:

  1) the lectures aimed to further the methodological and general questions. The lectures will be associated with 2 practical exercises which have to be performed from each student.

  2) the seminar exercise, which implies to carry out the following activities under the coordination of teachers: on field observation and surveys; analyses and synthesis of the known historical data; examination of the construction materials and building systems; analysis of the current condition of the building or of a part of it; proposals for restoration.

Detailed Course Content

• Restoration
  

  1. The graphic survey as a fundamental for restoration. The knowledge of the building using the direct sources (graphic survey; photographic survey, the main archaeometric methods)

  2. Historical research as a fundament for restoration. The knowledge of the building using the indirect sources: bibliographic, archival, iconographic research. From philological research to historical interpretation.

  3. Analysis of the state of conservation: the surfaces of the buildings and their preservation.

  4. Architecture, Restoration and Reuse, a comparison between ancient and new: Main theoretical positions in the current debate; operational practices and examples; use, abuse and reuse of historical and architectural heritage; methodological approaches to the historical pre-existences, categories and examples.

  5. The restoration project. Treatment of gaps; minimum intervention criterion; principle of reversibility. The reorganization of architectural space; the compatible reuse of the architectural heritage.

• CONSOLIDAMENTO DEGLI EDIFICI
  

  1. Materials and traditional building techniques. Stone, bricks, mortars, wood: processing and building systems. The historic masonry textures: analysis and interpretation. Overall configuration of the historic buildings.

  2. Damage and degradation. Main causes of instability, reading of the evidence on the building, foreshadowing the actual or expected damage (cracking framework and collapse mechanisms). Alterations and deterioration of materials: main causes, reading of the evidence on the building and foreshadowing of the actual or expected damage (identification of degradation).

  3. Investigation and diagnostic techniques. Illustration main specialist investigation and diagnostic tests: objectives, results interpretation.

  4. definition of restoration criteria. Reversibility, compatibility and minimal intervention. Before restoration: protection, preservation and prevention. After restoration: reconstruction, completion and innovation.

  5. The restoration project. Strengthening and improving techniques of the masonry structure.
