Learning Objectives

The course is based on two main educational objectives: Architecture as a representation and as a logical construction of space. The concepts will be developed alongside the lectures with design exercises; a final design essay will be the moment of synthesis and verification of the proposed teaching.

The project is as a matter of facts the place of confluence of all the different disciplines - historical-critical, aesthetic, physical-mathematical, technological - offered by the school of architecture. The basic knowledge of the architectural discipline - an initial as well as essential moment in student's cultural and design training - constitutes the primary objective of the course. It is organized in two phases: the first consists of the study of known architectural works on the theme of the single-family house, the second consists of composition and design exercises.

Course Structure

The course is divided into four exercises, each of which includes intermediate tests and a final verification. Each exercise includes a series of lessons on the topics of the course and collective/individual laboratory activities.

Detailed Course Content

The course will be introduced by the presentation systems norms and on technical, constructive and graphic standards of the residence project. The first exercise that students will face will be the analysis of single-family cases of some masters of contemporary architecture. The subsequent exercises will continue to study the single-family residence, which is related to the theme of the relationship between morphology, typology and construction. Students will be assigned as part of a typological and structural construction project. There will then be addressed: the Gothic Lot House and the Patio House developed in the stereotomic and tectonic construction variant. The critical reading of the works studied and the elaboration of the studies of architecture and other monographs on the masters of the Modern Movement: A. Loos, F., L. Wright, Le Corbusier, L. Mies van der Rohe, A. Aalto and L. Kahn.
