Learning Objectives

The course of Conservative Dentistry of the II semester of the fourth year of the CLMOPD has the formal educational objective of giving the student the cultural training and technical information that allow him to access the preclinical and clinical practical exercises through a detailed knowledge of the dental anatomy, decay, materials and techniques of diagnosis, decay treatments and the lack of dental hard tissue due to traumatic events.

The following will be studied: dental anatomy; etiology, caries diagnosis and intraoral radiography techniques; the materials and techniques of isolation of the operating field; replacement materials for dental hard tissue and their techniques of use (composites and amalgams); the adhesive techniques of the composite and the retentive techniques of the amalgam; cavitary principles and their execution in the different dental sectors and for the different restorative materials; color principles and selection criteria for the restoration, finishing and polishing of conservative restorations; whitening techniques, materials and principles of minimally invasive conservative


Course Structure

The teaching will be carried out through lectures on frontal teaching on the subjects being studied. There will also be some in-depth seminars on specific topics and evaluation laboratories for different materials used in Conservative Dentistry. Internship with practical exercises on extracted and simulated teeth.



Detailed Course Content

Dental anatomy, histology, physiology and principles of occlusion. Dental caries: historical notes; epidemiology; etiopathogenetic theories; control and prevention; diagnostic tests; pathological anatomy of caries. Examination, diagnosis and treatment plan of the patient with carious lesions. Techniques and materials for conservative intraoral radiographs. Photographs, drugs and anesthesia in conservative dentistry. Dental ergonomics: work positions and chair-based operating schemes. Isolation of the operating field: tools and techniques for using the rubber dam, solutions and tricks. urgencies in conservative and temporary restorations; Silver amalgam: historical outline and clinical evaluations of existing restorations. Enamel-dentin adhesion: available systems, application techniques and frequent errors. Composite, polymerization and instrumentation in conservative dentistry. Groove sealing: techniques and materials; preventive preparation. The determination of dental color. The color and morphology of the teeth. Opacity, transparency, translucency, fluorescence, opalescence. Principles of cavity preparation for composite and amalgam. The classification of Black cavities. Principles and techniques for direct composite restorations of the posterior and anterior sectors: matrices, wedges, stratification techniques, modeling, finishing and polishing; solutions and tricks. Preparations for indirect posterior and anterior restorations: inlays and facets. cementation of inlays and veneers. Digital dentistry in conservative: the CAD / CAM procedures. Combined conservative-periodontal treatment in class V lesions (abrasions, erosions, caries). Pulp and parapulpary pins, outline.
