Learning Objectives

Molecular and pathological bases of diseases
The course includes the presentation of the general mechanisms that underlie the disease, through the analysis of different etiological factors and pathogenesis of diseases, with emphasis on the cellular and molecular mechanisms. The student, at the end of the course, should be able to understand the cellular and molecular basis of diseases including cancer.

Course Structure

Molecular and pathological bases of diseases
The teaching will be carried out through the provision of classroom teaching lessons plus laboratory exercises to be carried out in the laboratories of the Biological Tower in order to improve the theoretical and practical knowledge acquired during the hours spent in the classroom.

Detailed Course Content

Molecular and pathological bases of diseases
Etiology Pathological manifestations. Basic concepts of pathology and general physiopathology. Definitions of health and disease; etiology and pathogenesis. Chemical, physical and biologic agents as causes of disease. Biological effects of exciting and ionizing radiations. Genetic: Methods of study: genetic markers and localization of pathogen genes. Modality of transmission of hereditary diseases. Models of human genetic diseases. Congenital not hereditary disease. Inflammation: Acute and chronic inflammation. Vascular phenomena, cell involved in inflammatory process, chemicals mediators, phagocytosis, exudate formation, type of exudates, granulomas, reparative process. Fever: Phisiopatology of the thermoregulation. Endogenous and exogenous pyrogens. Type of fever. Immunology and immunopathology: Immune system cells, immune response and mechanisms of immunoregulation. Anti-infective immunity. Ipersensibility immediate and delayed. Tollerance and autoimmunity, principal autoimmune diseases. Immunodeficiency congenital and acquired. Iperimmunoglobulinemie. Transplant immunology. Immunology and cancer. Cytopathology: Regressive process of cell and extracellular matrix; cellular death. Oncology: Control and alteration of the proliferation and cellular differentiation; hyperplasia, hypertrophy, metaplasia, anaplasia. Molecular basis of the neoplastic transformation: oncogenes and oncosuppressor genes. Neoplastic cell morphology. Invasion and metastasis. Promotion and tumor progression. Apoptosis and angiogenesis in the tumors. Chemical, physical and viral cancerogenesis. Antigens and tumoral markers. Criteria of the tumor classification. General physiopathology of the blood and haemostasis: Pathological erythropoiesis, anemia and alteration of the coagulation, leukemias. Physiopatology of the circulation: Hypertension, shock, thrombosis, embolism, stroke, arteriosclerosis and atherosclerosis. General physiopatology of the digestive system: Physiopatology of the liver. Alterations of the digestion and absorption. Diabetes
