Detailed Course Content

The course aims to promote knowledge of urban development in the Mediterranean area with particular reference to the experiences of Byzantine and Islamic Age, valuing the medieval heritage as a basic starting point for the definition of the modern city.

The complexity of classical cities; analysis of cultural and topographic changes of early medieval town in contact with the spread of Christianity, with the defensive needs of the Byzantine period, and innovations related to the model of the Islamic madina. Main cities: Rome, Costaninople, Damasco, Baghdad, Caire, Kairouan
