Learning Objectives

Knowledge of the main techniques for the diagnosis of genetic diseases through DNA and RNA analysis (coding and non-coding). Understand the relationship between basic research and clinical applications and use the acquired technologies for the theoretical resolution of specific biological problems.

Course Structure

The course includes lectures and laboratory exercises. In particular, the students will learn to use online databases to search for nucleotide sequences of mRNA and non-coding RNA and programs for their analysis (sequence alignment, search for targets for microRNAs, pathways analysis, search for primers for PCR). Moreover, they will learn the main techniques of RNA extraction (from cells and biological fluids) and the Reverse Transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT_PCR) Real Time.
