ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION 1

L-LIN/12 - 9 CFU - Annual Tuition

Teaching Staff

IAIN ANDREW HALLIDAY

Learning Objectives

I will try to provide a guide to the reading and the study of the set texts, but above all the course aims to encourage linguistic awareness and to explain some metalinguistic instruments that are also useful in achieving an awareness of one’s own language-learning processes. Indeed, an important goal for learners is to embark on a process of autonomous learning that will lead to linguistic and communicative competence. Textual and morphological analysis (also through examples of realia) will be used as practical illustrations of the theoretical aspects. The level of linguistic competence students are expected to attain by the end of the course is B1+ under the Common European Framework for Languages. I will seek to use English as much as possible during classes.

Course Structure

The 54 hours in the teaching room will take place in two-hour classes according to the timetable established at the beginning of the first semester. This is an "annual" subject, but most of the classes will take place during the first semester.

Detailed Course Content

In Modules A and B I aim to introduce, develop and apply some basic concepts and structures of the English language with the use of practical examples. During the first module much attention will be dedicated to morphological, grammatical and syntactical analysis, useful also for Module C, in which attention will be given to the practice of translation.

In Module B some attention will be give to elements of segmental phonetics and to phonology, with the aim of providing students with the instruments useful and necessary for better learning of English as a second and/or a foreign language from the point of view of both comprehension and production. It is in this module that examples of realia will play an important role through their analysis and their use for linguistic exercises.

In Module C I will give some attention to linguistic analysis from the point of view of its use in translation. Here we will be able to contrast English and Italian and improve our skills in translating between the languages, particularly in the direction English–Italian. The texts used will be varied in type and register and we will give attention to the correct use of dictionaries, above all monolingual dictionaries.

Language instruction classes / Anglophone culture

Students will attend the language instruction classes divided in groups according to their starting levels of linguistic competence. To this end an entry test will be administered, news of which will be published at the beginning of the academic year on the departmental website and on Studium, the university’s e-learning platform. The notional starting level of linguistic competence is B1 under the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. These language instruction and anglophone culture classes with native speaker teachers are an important part of the course.
