Learning Objectives

Complete phisical examination of the patient and oro-maxillofacial region. To approach the patient udergoing oral surgery. Personal esecution of all procedures for local anesthesia (Truncular anesthesia, plessic anesthesia). Correct execution of oral sutures. Knowledge of surgical instruments. Preparation of the surgical table. Execution, on patients, of: dental extractions, removal of oral lesions, drainage of abscesses.



Detailed Course Content

1) SURGICAL INSTRUMENTATION IN ORAL SURGERY

Surgical Instruments. Sutures. Hemostatic materials. Consumables

 

2) PRINCIPLES OF SURGICAL STERILITY

Sugical scrubs. The surgical field in oral surgery. Surgeon and assistant's sterility.

 

3) ANTIMICROBIAL PROPHYLAXIS IN ORAL SURGERY

Distinction between Antimicrobical prophylaxis and therapy. The bacterial antibiotic resistance. International Guidelines on Antimicrobical prophylaxis

 

4) ORAL SURGICAL ANATHOMY

Know, identify and protect vascular and nervous structures at risk in oral surgery.

 

5) LOCAL ANESTHESIA IN ORAL SURGERY

Refrigeration anesthesia. Topical anesthesia. Infiltration anesthesia. Plessic anesthesia. Troncular anesthesia.

 

6) BASIC ORAL SUTURES

 

7) ORAL BIOPSY

Principles and indications for oral biopsy. Surgical instruments useful for oral biopsy and conservation of the oral sample. Incisional Biopsy. Excisional Biopsy. Enlarged excisional biopsy. Algorithm for the choice of the correct biopsy.

 

8) BENIGN ORAL TUMORS

Benign mucosal tumors. Benign odontogenic tumor. Benign non-odontogenic tumor. Surgical approach and differential diagnosis with malignant tumors.

 

9) DENTOALVEOLAR TRAUMA

Classification. Treatment. Timing

 

10) PRE-PROSTHETIC SURGERY

Plastic surgery of the fornix. Classifications of atrophic jaw (Cawood & Howell). GBR. Bone grafts. Autologous bone grafts. Alloplastic bone grafts. Xenogeneic bone grafts. Allogeneic bone grafts. Alveolar Distraction. Onlay and Inlay grafts. Split-crest. Sinus lift.

 

11) CYSTIC LESIONS OF THE JAWS

Odontogenic cysts. Inflammatory cysts. Non-odontogenic cysts. Pseudocysts.
